How does searching work?

The search function is only available to registered members of InMyField.
Users can search by a variety of criteria including name, country, general and/or specific field of work, years of experience and keywords. As many or as few criteria can be used in a search. To access the search feature simply click 'search' on the menu bar once you have logged in. The results are displayed as synopsis results by default: this shows an abbreviated version of the member's profile which can be clicked to be expanded. If you would prefer to view all the full member profiles just click 'view full profiles' at the top right and the search results will display full profiles, one per page.

How can I narrow down my search?

If you run a search and it returns a large number of search results you can refine your search - click this option from the top of the search page and add another criteria to focus your search. Keywords are a good feature to narrow down a search and find people who have a specific interest or expertise.

How often can I search?

There are no limits to how often members can search InMyField.

How do I know profiles are accurate?

It is up to individual members to maintain their profiles and we trust that InMyField members will represent themselves professionally. However, we would recommend that you take some time to verify a member’s details before meeting in person – for example confirming place of employment or publication details.

If you feel a profile is inaccurate please let us know and we will look into the matter.

What is 'find similar'?

Find Similar is one of the most powerful features of InMyField. When viewing any member profile - including your own - you will see the 'Find Similar' button at the top of the profile. When you click this button you will launch a search of the member database, using the member profile you are currently viewing as the search criteria. Any member profile which the system ranks as similar to the one you were viewing will be returned as a search result. InMyField uses a weighting system to determine which profiles are returned as similar.

What is ‘my contacts’?

My Contacts is simply an address book – bookmark - that you compile yourself. It stores profiles of members that you have found who are involved in fields that interest you, and provides an easy link to the full member profile.

My Contacts is simply a system to bookmark profiles of members that you have found who are involved in fields that interest you.

How do I add people to my contact list?

On viewing a profile, click the ‘add to contacts’ button at the bottom of the page.

Can I prevent people from adding me to their list?

No. The essence of the site is to promote the exchange of information between research professionals. To prevent people from including you in their contacts list would be contrary to this aim.

If you are receiving unwanted emails from a member please let us know and we will look into the matter.

What is the list on my dashboard page?

The first page that you view once you have logged in is your dashboard page. Here, InMyField will compile relevant information for you and display it as easy links. You can quickly click to view new funding opportunities or job openings in your field, new forum topics in your field, or a list of new members who have a profile similar to yours.

What are the auto-update emails I am receiving?

InMyField will automatically send you emails to inform you of new similar members, new jobs and funding listings in your field, and new forum topics in your field. This is essentially the information displayed on your dashboard page. If you would like to increase / decrease the frequency of these emails, or deactivate them entirely, you can do this by viewing your Account section. The link for this is on the top right of the screen, once you are logged in.
